Trabectedin Plus Pegylated Liposomal Doxorubicin in Recurrent Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer remains the second-most lethal gynecologic malignancy after cervical cancer, with approximately 125,000 deaths annually worldwide. Primary therapy for advanced disease includes maximal surgical debulking followed by platinum/taxane chemotherapy. Despite approximately 80% response rates to primary therapy, most women eventually suffer recurrent disease and die. 

In a new study published in the June issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the combination of Trabectedin plus pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (Doxil) proves to be effective in recurrent ovarian cancer.

FDA decides to withdraw the accelerated approval for Mylotarg

Pfizer Inc., in agreement with the FDA, announced that the commercial marketing of Mylotarg (gemtuzumab ozogamicin) will be voluntarily discontinued, and the new drug application (NDA) for Mylotarg will be withdrawn as of October 15, 2010.

Vitamin D does not reduce the risk of lymphoma, and other rare cancers

Despite hopes that higher blood levels of vitamin D might reduce cancer risk, a large study finds no protective effect against non-Hodgkin lymphoma or cancer of the endometrium, esophagus, stomach, kidney, ovary, or pancreas. In this study, carried out by researchers from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and many other research institutions, data based on blood samples originally drawn for 10 individual studies were combined to investigate whether people with high levels of vitamin D were less likely to develop these rarer cancers.

Prior studies from Sweden have shown that people living near oil refinery have increased risk of leukemia.

Statins cholesterol lowering medication prevents prostate cancer recurrence

Statins are cholesterol-lowering medications in widespread use to reduce the risk of heart disease and all-cause mortality. Statins have been shown to prevent cell proliferation of various cell types, including endothelial cells, and to improve cardiovascular health. There is growing interest in the anticancer activity of these medications.

In a new study from the University of Chicago, statins drugs were found to lower prostate cancer recurrence in men following radiation therapy.
